Wildfire Wrap

Attendance

Another average week for us…still holding around 180.

Talk

Last night was alot of fun watching Austin hit the stage for the third time this year.  He decided he wanted to talk to our students on worship. Primarily because its one of his favorite topics, but also because as a team we’ve been discussing how the students haventbeen into it as they have in the past. Austin planned the entire service…he even selected certain songs and band members to ensure the worship last night was up to par. He did a great job…and as his mentor this is one of the more fulfilling areas to work with him on because you can easily see the fruit. He is destined to be a great youth pastor one day…hope I am still around to see it.

Volunteer Involvement

Last night was one of those weeks where my awareness of the need for more volunteers was definitely heightened.  When you have a couple of volunteers in key positions absent things can get alittle stressful.  Also we had probably five of our girls groups led by high school girls.  Now again our high schoolers rock…but we also think it’s important to have an adult in each group.  So yeah if you know any adults free on Wednesday nights and think they might be a good fit on our team let me know.

Music/Program

Austin and Nick did a great job selecting the songs for this special night where WORSHIP was the topic.  We decided to do two fast songs up front and two slower songs at the back.  Laura led out with Heart of Worship and Rebecca sang Came to My Rescue which is one of my personal favorites.  It was awesome to have Nick tell the students to raise their hands at the end…I think a lot of times we are afraid to challenge them which is the very thing they need.  It has been a long time since our students worshiped like they did last night. We showed the following video for the Wifi video;

Final Thought

Wildfire can happen without me.  To many that might seem like a “duh” statement…but a lot of times you struggle as a youth pastor to not let “ownership” get in the way of God really being the leader.  Wildfire is my baby…in the sense that I came up with the idea and work really hard to make it successful, however I recognize I cannot do it alone and it will go on without me.  Watching Austin speak and others lead last night was a healthy reminder that I am part of a team, a body of believers that make Wildfire what it is.

Summer Camp

Just thought I would throw the link up here on my blog to our website to register for summer camp.  If your child will be in 6-8th grade this fall they are welcome to come to this years camp July 12-16th…registration is open until July 1st.  Check it out HERE.

The Little Things Matter

Ever felt like your life doesnt really matter all that much? I think we all do from time to time…part of that fallen nature that we cant seem to get rid of.

Someone sent this to me and I thought it was pretty encouraging and reminded me that the little stuff matters more than we think it does. Click the image below to check it out.

What If God Showed Up?

Like He actually showed up to one of our church services? Maybe it would be something like this;

FAYETTEVILLE, NC—Parishioners at the First Presbyterian Church were left stunned and in awe of His glory Sunday, when the Lord God Almighty dropped by their 11 a.m. service unannounced.

Interrupting Pastor Terry Pridgen’s sermon on His unending mercy, God appeared suddenly before His flock as an intense beam of white light, instantly dispersing the earthly forms of those seated in the first two pews. Sources said the remaining congregants had to avert their eyes from their Creator, whose booming celestial voice overwhelmed their worldly senses and humbled their hearts as He politely apologized for not calling first.

“I AM the God of Abraham, the LORD MOST HIGH, who brought you forth from the bondage of Egypt,” God said unto church members, many of whom cowered in reverent fear of Him. “Thought I’d just pop in and see how things were going. Please, pretend like I’m not even here.”

The Supreme Being then thanked the choir for its “lovely introduction” and took a seat to the right of the altar.

According to wholly repentant witnesses, who were scarcely able to look upon the Alpha and Omega, much less conceive of the enormity of His Might, God did not speak again for the entirety of the service, but was seen nodding approvingly during the Nicene Creed.

Attendees reportedly did not ask the One Who Made Them Flesh why He had chosen to visit their small parish, though some suspected the church’s new electric organ might have had something to do with it.

“I don’t think anyone knew He was coming,” said churchgoer Ron Stiehl, adding that, for once, he was happy his wife dragged him to church. “At least it seemed that way when He started walking toward us and everyone was yelling their heads off like it was Judgment Day.”

“Turns out the King of Kings was just making the rounds,” Stiehl continued. “I thought He’d be taller.”

While God did not reveal unto man a reason for His visit—nor did He, in His great wisdom, offer to pay for the six stained-glass windows that shattered from the awesome power of His presence—the Almighty sat among His followers for the last 35 minutes of the Sunday service, as well as the free coffee and pastries that followed.

Sources said that Our Father sat alone eating two cinnamon-sugar doughnuts, and was approached only once, when 5-year-old Jeremy Pacheco tried to hug the omnipotent deity. The boy’s parents immediately yanked him away.

The other 112 church members avoided God entirely, and reacted to His continued stay with a mix of astonishment, confusion, fearful reverence, and the sublime inner peace that comes with the knowledge of a power greater than oneself.

“I wanted to ask the Lord what heaven is like, and if my mother is there, but I wasn’t sure if it’s still considered taking His name in vain when you address Him directly,” Wendy Alston said. “And I didn’t dare draw attention to myself with two teenagers wearing blue jeans to church. I could barely look at Him, I was so ashamed.”

“Oh dear God,” said 72-year-old church volunteer Michael Sharpe, completely enraptured by the materialization of the One True Creator before his very eyes. “Oh, dear God in heaven.”

Since the Almighty’s decision to stop by the First Presbyterian Church, the theological world has been thrown into chaos. Presbyterian leaders said God’s appearance was indisputable proof that their denomination is the one true faith, but afternoon sightings of the Lord at two other Fayetteville churches, as well as one synagogue, have cast doubt on that theory.

“God said He just wanted to see what we were up to,” Pastor Pridgen said. “This is His house, after all. He can drop in whenever He wants.”

“Although, you’d think an all-knowing deity unbound by time and space would be able to give us some warning so we could at least put a bulletin in the church newsletter,” the pastor added. “Not that I’m complaining or anything. All praise be to God. Is He still hanging around the parking lot?”

Attendance

Attendance was normal.

Talk

The last talk in the WIDE OPEN series. I ended talking about how the Israelites were open to effort.  In one sense God gave them the Promised Land…but without their effort they would not have got there.  Definitely not the best of the four talks…felt like I read too much…which always ends up happening when I dont get to put as much into the prep as I would’ve liked to. As I walked up to deliver the talk, it was painful to look over and see a girl put her Ipod earbuds in both ears as I began to speak. :/

Volunteer Involvement

Had a full house last night…can only think of one leader that wasnt able to make it. Its always nice to have ‘all-hands’ on deck.  The more leaders present the more ministry we are able to do.  As I consistently share with my team; they are the ministry.  We can do without the game, worship…heck even the talk and still do ministry…but we cannot ministry to 200 students without them.  That being said what could we do with even more leaders to shepherd our students?

Music/Program

Nick did a great job with worship…once again without a drummer :/ I appreciate how much work he puts into making worship happen each week for children’s, middle and school ministries…that is a lot. We showed a video I found on the internet that features a guy making a horrible mistake at Home Depot…and as usual I setup the video as a shot of one of our own leaders working at Home Depot.  Always makes it more funny when people are picturing it as one of their leaders up there. I cant put the video on the blog but you can watch it HERE if you would like to.

Final Thought

When you do ministry each and every week you have to constantly fight it becoming just an “ordinary” night.  I hate when that feeling creeps in that you just want to get through the night.  Forgive us Father when we begin to see another opportunity to minister to students who so desperately need it as just something to get through.  This is the hardest part of decreasing resources in our department…both $$ and people resources…

History That Could’ve Been

I read an article today I thought was pretty interesting. It was about a speech prepared to be delivered by President Nixon if Niel Armstrong died during the moon landing. It’s pretty eerie to think about, but it underscores just how dangerous the mission really was. Must be weird to write speeches for events that could take place, I wonder what other unspoken famous speeches exist out there?

Here’s the text of that Nixon speech that was never given; (thank God)

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. The following speech, revealed in 1999, was prepared by Nixon’s then speechwriter, William Safire, to be used in the event of a disaster that would maroon the astronauts on the moon:

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind’s most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

A Baby’s First Thought…

…………Help I’m Alive!

I’ve been hearing this song on the radio over the last month and finally found out who it was so I could download it to my IPOD.  At the gym this morning I was trying to think about what it could be about.  For whatever reason it made me think about a baby being born.  They come into this world very dependent beings and have absolutely no problem making that known.  Though they cant use words yet, they definitely communicate that they need our help.  As we get older we are “nurtured” to the point where we don’t believe its true anymore.  Especially in America we are taught to be individuals who are “self-sufficient” and can exist with little or no dependence on others. What if God never intended us to lose our desperate need for each other? What if instead of filling our diapers and crying we could articulate with words; “Help I’m Alive!”?

Attendance

Average attendance tonight.  Our community time was down abit…which was unusual. Once the program started most the seats were filled.

Talk

Talk #3 in the WIDE OPEN series.  We looked at Joshua seven talking about how Achans sin slowed Israel’s progression into the Promised Land.  My main point was; Being open to Gods correction always has less consequences than hiding does. Since Achan ended up getting stoned to death, we gave each student a rock to take home to remember how serious sin is to God and that Jesus was stoned to death for our sin. Definitely wasn’t my best in the series…one of those nights where I had much more on my mind than the talk and it was hard to deliver it.  This was confirmed when I found a note on one of the seats that a student had written saying that this talk wasnt interesting.

Volunteer Involvement

Though our volunteers each live very busy lives its encouraging that they still show up.  I love the fact that instead of just skipping a night all-together because of working late  or a family event they will show up for at least part of Wildfire….thats devotion.

Music/Program

We gave Nick the night off so he could cheer on the Blazers downtown. Katelyn Bonn came in and led worship for us…and man did she do a great job. Katelyn was part of worship team back when I started at Sunset in 04…and she had been away the last year only to come back and blow us away.  She even brought her own drummer Seth who played with a lot of passion and strength. I especially loved how he rocked out “Mighty to Save.” Whew…I love when the drummer gives it all…changes the whole feel of the room and set.  For the Wifi video we showed a nice American Idol clip that Austin found.  Gotta love it.

Final Thought

I would be a lot better youth pastor if God gave us a switch that we could flip and shut off everything that happened during the day leading up to the program time. Students & leaders deserve 100% of me and rarely do they get it.  Church politics and working through relationship junk can really sap your energy and excitement.

Floating Thoughts

  • Another tough week in the office. Kembe resigned Monday…she was our student ministry admin for 9 years. Losing her I lose far more than an admin…she has steadied me through many storms; personal and in ministry.
  • Seminary is rolling down the final week of the semester next week…I am on top of the homework…one more big project due on the 20th
  • Looking forward to a hike Saturday with some of the guy leaders from Wildfire
  • Easter was interesting this year. Missed my family alot…
  • I hope this summer I can get a personal life…ministry is a constant thief.
  • The PALM Pre didnt come out today as some had speculated. I admit it was wishful thinking to think it would come out this early. The next projected release dates are; May 10th, 17th and June 29th . Cant wait.
  • Talk #3 tonight in the WIDE OPEN series. Its about not hiding SIN.  Praying God uses it big time.
  • Had alot of fun yesterday with Chip. I miss having him in town to chill with and vent.
  • Feeling the time is ripe to go “all-in” with something. Dont want to though…makes my stomach hurt.

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” CS Lewis
