My Church #3

My church would not have memorials.

Some of you might not even know what I am talking about because you have always been part of churches who have held this as a value…a memorial is something physical that is bought in memory of a lost loved one and is given to the church with the idea that they would proudly display it in remembrance of them.  While I have seen them run the gambit from a tree all the way to a life-size statue of someone…usually it is something that relates with where the deceased had passion. Let me just say to anyone out there that have done a memorial or believes strongly in them…I totally get WHY you would want to have such a thing represented in a place that meant so much to a lost loved one.  That being said this blog series is all about “My Church” so I am sharing with you some thoughts on why if I designed a church it would not have memorials.  There are number of issues that come to mind, but one permeates all the others: memorials take the focus off of Christ and place it on people.  It seems throughout church history Christians have struggled with how much honor should be given to themselves.  Whether they glorify them as saints like Catholics do or make them into dirty rags like good old Baptists do (I can say that cause I used to be one) Christians just can’t seem to get this one right.  Church is supposed to be about Jesus Christ, not us…so to me it follows that as much as humanly possible we must seek to lay aside our glory (however due it may be) and seek to point towards Jesus. Could even our building and church grounds be seen as opportunities to point people towards Jesus? I tend to think so. While that seems enough of a reason to me not to have them, here are a number of others that make me wanna throw them out;

  • Once given and displayed at the church it becomes impossible to have remove such a display…even decades after the person has passed away.
  • This is often one of the most political parts of a church…
  • Whose “worthy” of a memorial anyway? How could anyone ever be denied a memorial at a church?  Allowing some to have memorials and not others creates a hierarchal structure in the church that should not exist.
  • Memorials cost money to maintain over the years and can often take vital church resources to keep them.

I know this post might have hit a nerve with some of you in light of recent events…but I ask you to pause and think about my concerns before you respond.  As a pastor our job is to continue the work of the Chief Shepherd, drawing all the lost sheep back into the pen. In the end the sheep matter deeply to Him and we remain as His living memorials.

And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
1 Peter 5:4TNIV

All memorials will fade down here…how much better for us to keep our focus on receiving Crowns that will never fade or tarnish.

Floating Thoughts

  • I am minutes away from finding the results from last weeks CT scan. Not excited…pretty sure its not gonna be good news.
  • Started a bible study with Tyler last night.  We are wrestling with the Sovereignty of God.  That is a big word that basically means how much of our lives is God in control of…vs our control.
  • One week from tomorrow is finally the launch of the PALM Pre.  Austin and I will be camping out…(getting there at 6am on Saturday morning) to ensure we walk away with a new Pre.
  • I like the summer weather…but get pretty tired of my apartment being 88 degrees when I come home in the afternoon.
  • Can’t believe June is next week…definitely dont feel ready for all thats happening this summer.
  • Are we nearing WW3? While I am not a doomsdayer…I do think just one nuclear bomb going off can set off a chain of events that would equal WW3.
  • Is blogging done? I just dont get the sense people are reading my blog like they once did. I will admit my blog reading has been waning…I usually quickly check them out to see if there’s anything interesting.
  • The new Hillsong UNITED CD is out.  It’s pretty good as usual. My favorites on it are; Soon, Yours Forever, You Hold Me Now, with my very favorite being; Tear Down These Walls
  • Doing my best to not lose heart. This is the verse currently in my car;

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:3TNIV

Talk

Last night was a special night. We ended the Generation2Generation series with an interview of a 91 year old POW from World War 2! This had been something in the works for the past three weeks but I wasn’t confident it was going to come together. Having only talked with her on the phone I was understandably a little nervious about how it would go…mostly I was worried about how the students would respond.  She was awesome…everything I had hoped for. The students were VERY respectful and sat quietly and listening to her share for 35 minutes! She used scripture and had a confident faith in God that was very encouraging. Her message was clear; if God calls you to something He will see you through it.  Now that sort of message can be powerful coming from anyone…but coming from someone who has lived through what she did…sheesh.

Volunteer Involvement

Good night as far as volunteers go. Once again we were down a number of small group leaders which meant we had to combine some groups and have coaches lead some of them.  On a positive note we gained a couple of leaders for camp and also had another checking us out!

Music/Program

Alittle crazy program tonight. The game was Donut Try This At Home…basically kids dangle donuts on a string in front of their friends face and they nibble it away.  Nick and his team walked on the stage ready to do the worship set and realized our drummer was missing.  Turns out he was praying over at the service for the Resnicks.  After an awkward 2 minutes…the drummer showed up and worship went on.  For the WiFi video we showed the video on Very Funny Friday post…a girl getting owned by a table.  Very rewarding to watch it on the big screen.

Final Thought

Interesting as I sat there last night interviewing this 91 year old woman (I should say listened to her as I asked her only three questions and listened for about 30min) it was if she was there just for me. Ever have those sort of moments where you forget where you are at and that there are others sharing the same space with you?  Something happened during the afternoon that got me pretty discouraged about where things are going…and God used this woman to reset my perspective on it all and gave me hope.  Real ministry is never easy…I need to stop thinking its supposed to be.

Talk

Talk #3 in the Generation 2 Generation series.  We watched a video of a couple who has been married 51 years!  Needless to say their bit of wisdom was related to marrying someone with similar values and your marriage will last.  It was fun talking on marriage…a topic I know alot  about (wink wink).  All kidding aside…I took the authentic approach and was pretty open about my desire to be married one day and yet at the same time how scared I am to get married.  I thought it was encouraging when I asked the students to standup if they still wanted t0 get married…95% stood up.  Interesting how hope springs eternal in a culture that seems to begin a new attack on marriage every single day.  After the talk I got some feedback from leaders that students thought I contradicted myself in the talk…highlighting in a story to start how I was attracted to a girls beauty and then I told them that the outside doesnt matter and to focus on the inside.  I can definitely see how they came to this conclusion and I couldve been clearer with some things. I plan to revisit the convo next week.

Definitely a funny moment when the grandson of the seniors in our video realized it was going to be his grandparents this week, he didnt know they were going to be featured!

Volunteer Involvement

Another solid night with our volunteer team.  My favorite part was when we did popcorn prayer before Wildfire…there was great participation and I appreciated so much prayer for me!  It was also sweet to have a guy checking us out to potentially become a new small group leader…keep inviting them people!

Music/Program

Katelyn Bonn is a rockstar! Seriously she is an awesome girl. She filled in for Nick last night leading worship as he was resting from the Noah program this past Sunday.   Kids seemed into it this week…which is awesome to see a couple week run where we arent struggling as much in this area. I especially liked “Came to My Rescue” still is a favorite of mine and seems to connect with the students each time. We showed the below video for our WiFi of a guy who painted a Mona Lisa with grease from burgers!

Final Thought

The year is rolling down which is always a bittersweet time.  As a youth pastor you have to exist in two world simultaneously.  It is important to celebrate the volunteers who have just served in your ministry the past 9 months…to slow down enough to acknowledge that their work was noticed and valued. At the exact same time you have to be thinking about the fall…about summer camp and the new group of students & leaders that you will be working with.  So at the same time I have to be thanking and recruiting, saying goodbye and saying hello. Weird and hard to do both well.  4 more weeks…Ignite Nite in two.

Quit Trying To Be A Hammer…

I read the below article at churchrelevance.com and thought it was pretty interesting…they tend to have some good articles on ministry. Having attended and worked at a “megachurch” in the past (now 14K people attend it) I have always been a fan…mostly because of just how much God used it to form me. So yeah check it out and let me know what you think.

toolbox

In the big picture, a toolbox with all hammers isn’t very effective. You can hit nails, pry, and not much more. A good toolbox has hammers, wrenches, files, and screwdrivers. It has a drill, some pliers, and plenty of other tools.

So why do so many churches try to be a hammer?

Eugene Cho of Quest Church (Seattle, WA) recently blogged about the pursuit so many churches have to be a megachurch. He states:

Megachurches only comprise 1% of the churches in North America. But then why do the majority of the conferences revolve around the megachurches and their pastors?

I think megachurches and their leaders are doing phenomenal ministry.  I really do.  But we’ve elevated this 1% as the epitome and face of a successful ministry and created a machine of conferences, publishers, books, and networks based on this very limited expression.

Craig Groeschel of LifeChurch.tv (Edmond, OK) puts it this way:

In order to reach people that no one is reaching, you will have to do things that no one is doing. But in order to do things that no one is doing, you can’t do what everyone else is doing.

We each have a unique God-given calling, but many of us want to live the calling of  the ministers in the limelight. Likewise, each church has a unique God-given calling, but too many churches distract themselves by pursuing the calling of famous megachurches. Consider how 1 Corinthians 12 reads when substituting church terms:

The Church has many different parts, not just one part. If the house church says, “I am not a part of the Church because I am not a megachurch,” that does not make it any less a part of the Church. And if the rural church says, “I am not part of the Church because I am not a gigachurch,” would that make it any less a part of the Church? If the whole Church were a gigachurch, how would you reach rural areas? Or if the whole Church were a rural church, how would you reach urban areas?

But the Church has many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange the Church would be if it had only one part! Yes, there are many parts, but only one Church. The gigachurch can never say to the megachurch, “I don’t need you.” The Internet church can’t say to the church plant, “I don’t need you.”

In fact, some parts of the Church that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.

To clarify, I do think it is good to study successful churches when the principles learned are considered within the context of your church’s unique calling. And I do believe that good ministry typically grows churches. However, some of the greatest ministries have the smallest numbers. Sometimes small is needed to be effective. Sometimes huge is needed.

I recommend that you study them all. Learn from megachurches, house churches, rural churches, and the rest.

Above all else, never lose focus of staying true to your church’s purpose. If God wants you to be a hammer, be a hammer. If God wants you to be a wrench, be a wrench.

Apartment Living

I have grown to love my apartment…but that’s not to say that I dont long for the day when I can own my own home.  Whether its having a dog, a nice backyard or entertaining larger groups of people I cannot wait for that day.

One of the things I struggle with living in an apartment is when to confront your neighbor with something they are doing that negatively impacts you.  My natural instinct is to say nothing…which is mostly out of fear of creating a negative relationship with them and further negative issues.  I feel I’ve been blessed with pretty good neighbors over the years…haven’t run into many huge issues.  Some examples of things I’ve struggled with whether or not to say something are; someone parking in my assigned parking spot, loud music and people parking close to my car.  The worst and something I want to ask for your advice on is people smoking in the hallway outside my window.  My next door neighbor and her friends smoke in the hallway instead of on her deck late at night, I assume because she has younger children who are sleeping.  This becomes problematic during the warmer monthes when I open my window…the smoke comes right into my living room (the window is only a couple feet from where they smoke)…and is really bad when I put a fan in my bedroom window to cool my room down to sleep.  Imagine sleeping in a bowling alley. So yeah this happened for the first time this season last night…should I say something? I know the lady who lives there’s name…we have said “Hello” a couple of times but now she has a live in boyfriend who is usually with her and I havent ever talked with him. What do you think?

Attendance

Average…still holding strong from last weeks 200.

Talk

Talk #2 in the Generation2Generation series.  It’s been really cool attempting to connect one generation to another.  Last night we talked about our parent relationships.  I wish I had more time to put this talk together, the majority of it I stole from a buddy online…which is not my style. Parents is one of those topics that middle schoolers don’t tend to want to talk about and yet as adults we know that they need to.

I am excited about some cool things that might happen the next couple of weeks; working on possibly having a 91 year old POW from WW2 share and also on calling my grandma live on our stage. Do you have any creative ideas for connecting the generations?

Volunteer Involvement

Yesterday was a crazy day…and I mean crazy.  Our church was hosting a choir group from Cal Baptist University which switched our normal schedule and flow. Also we had a number of our leaders show 1 ½ hour early to put together a promo piece for our upcoming Ignite Nite (stay tuned for a blog on that slick promo) and instead of getting half done like I assumed they would, they finished all 1000 of them! Thanks so much team! The loss of Kembe as our admin has been felt deeply but many have stepped up and  lightened the load.

Music/Program

Continuing with the crazy theme…we had a bit of a crazy night with our tech as well.  From my mic skipping in and out to our video camera not working during the game things just seemed on the fritz. That’s not to say our teams didn’t work hard, they always do.  Worship was alright…the students didn’t seem to respond as much as previous weeks. Not sure what it was, probably a number of things. I love the song Devotion.

Final Thought

Last night as I looked back over the day…I think it ended up being a pretty solid program given how much was going against it yesterday. Our leaders continue to love on our students which matters far more than if my mic worked. I continue to be on a journey on valuing relationships over the program.

I’m writing this on the road to Cannon Beach for a day-long student ministry team meeting.  The plan is to bring together a bunch of resources that each of us use to train/encourage our volunteers and put it into one concise manual we use student ministry wide. I also hope to have a number of other conversations…summer is almost here and next thing we know it will be fall.
