Moments in History (2)

If you were in North Carolina on December 17, 1903 you might have noticed the above contraption gliding through the air in a field near the coast.  This of course was the date of the first powered flight by The Wright Brothers.  Being that I have always appreciated and loved flight ever since I could remember, I would love to have been one of the few on a cold December day to see this historical first flight.

In a pre-9/11 world, my grandpa would occasionally take me to the airport when I was a boy just to watch planes take off and land.  We would park our car on a road with planes landing right over our heads, seemed like they were just 30 ft above our heads at times.   I can remember being in awe that these huge planes could actually achieve lift and rise into the sky. As most of you know my mom works for Delta Airlines (formerly Northwest) and growing up I was also treated to flights around the country for various vacations with the family.  I loved the thrill on the inside of the plane just as much as the outside. This past summer you might have recalled all my tweets about the airshow…yeah theres no doubt I love anything related to flight.

Crazy to think how the moment captured in the picture above has influenced so much…

Moments in History (1)

If I had a time machine one moment in history I would love to experience is the night man first walked on the moon. I know some of you are old enough to have experienced July 20th 1969 firsthand…I can’t imagine what it must have felt like (tell us your feelings if you experienced this one).  I mean in today’s world where spaceflight seems common and in the movies we’ve seen even further into the future many people don’t understand just how unique this moment was. It was the beginning of so much and those astronauts really stepped into the unknown up there since none of that had ever been done before.

Honestly I don’t think I ever look at a full moon and not think; men have actually walked up there!  The little boy inside of me will always be in awe of this fact. I mean how many humans can say they saw this view with their own eyes?

9 Years.

Ever since 9/11 I’ve kept the above picture on my desk in an effort to remember this tragic event.  Knowing myself I knew that as time passed I would be tempted to forget this day, how I felt and how our security was taken away in a matter of minutes. Never before in my lifetime had anyone attacked America’s Homeland. I know it was naive to think that this couldn’t ever happen here, but I think there was alot of reason for us to believe this.  Partly due to the amount of time since a strike on America this significant had happened…60 years? Pearl Harbor? And even that was different because it wasnt on the mainland. Personally I was 20 on 9/11 and that’s quite a long time to live without any major attack. I also believe the media and what we were taught growing up about Americas place in the world, being #1, the best & strongest nation in the world has a way of making you think you were safe from these sort of attacks.

Seems like most of America has forgot again just what terrorists are capable of. I sense due to the rhetoric I hear on TV and in water cooler conversations that we have lost that healthy fear of our enemies and the need to protect ourselves from them.  In our fast-paced culture how could we remember that something like this CAN indeed happen here? I would submit something I heard a radio commentator suggest in the weeks following 9/11…you know when liberals began to censor the raw images of planes crashing into buildings? Do you remember the images quickly leaving our TVs until they were all but gone? This commentator suggested that the only way to keep us from forgetting we would need to see the event every single day. He said there should be a cable channel access channel that all it plays over and over was the footage of the events of 9/11.  While this would not be “politically correct”, I do think it would have helped many not quickly lose what we learned in the fall of 2001; America was no longer safe from terrorists on the other side of the globe AND we must do whatever necessary to prevent any further attacks.

I’m thankful none have happened yet…at least for the past 9 years. Have you forgotten? May this remind you;

Ten Bucks.

A couple years ago I starting using Twitter never knowing it would become such a daily part of our lives. Now some of you readers out there still might not twitter and even think it’s a waste of time, but as we are seeing with the Haiti relief effort…twitter is playing a unique roll…raising literally millions of dollars from 100′s of thousands of people around the world.  Basically the Red Cross has a partnership with cell phone providers and if you text “Haiti” to  ”90999″ you can donate $10 to help bring aid via your cell phone bill. I did it the other day and was pleased to see both how easy and secure it was.

So I am encouraging my readers to join this cause…everyone can afford $10 on their next bill to help provide food, water and shelter to those who need it. What an awesome use of social media…to bring rapid relief to people in need thousands of miles away.

Water on Our Moon.

You ever hear something on the news and noticed how we have become numb to big news events because we are so connected with worldwide instant news? I felt this way with the report this week that NASA found a significant amount of water on the moon.  Regardless of your interest in space stuff, finding water under the moon surface is an incredible find! What was once thought of as just a barren rock of dust now has so much potential for sustaining life.

If you wanna read more about it check THIS out.

Moon Landing in 2009

In light of Monday’s 40th anniversary of the moon landing I thought I would share this video of what it would be like if it had happened today instead of 1969.

History That Could’ve Been

I read an article today I thought was pretty interesting. It was about a speech prepared to be delivered by President Nixon if Niel Armstrong died during the moon landing. It’s pretty eerie to think about, but it underscores just how dangerous the mission really was. Must be weird to write speeches for events that could take place, I wonder what other unspoken famous speeches exist out there?

Here’s the text of that Nixon speech that was never given; (thank God)

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. The following speech, revealed in 1999, was prepared by Nixon’s then speechwriter, William Safire, to be used in the event of a disaster that would maroon the astronauts on the moon:

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind’s most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.
