Made It.

In case you haven’t heard…I made it back to Michigan. Was much easier flying for 6 hrs or so back across the country instead of driving for 5 days.  Still waiting for all my stuff to make it here though…odd being here without everything I own.  My cubes should arrive tomorrow and my car on Friday…definitely will feel more permanent once they arrive.

Been great getting caught up with family…though a tough road lies ahead of us as my grandfather is beginning to walk down what looks to be a long road of Alzheimers/dementia. It’s a cruel disease and is much harder when the person is in absolute denial about having it.  I appreciate your prayers and any insight you might have with the disease.

Plan on visiting NorthRidge this weekend. Definitely excited to jump back into community there.

7yrs in Portland: What I’ve Learned #4

Here on my last full day living in Portland, I conclude this blog series on lessons that I learned while living 7 years out here.  I hope you have enjoyed them, as some of them were hard lessons to learn. I know the next chapter will have some challenging ones to learn as well…but I am hopeful for an upswing :)

  • If you ignore your own faith-walk it can quickly slip away.
  • People have many different expectations for Pastors – if you try to meet all of them you will fail.

7yrs in Portland: What I’ve Learned #3

My apartment is starting to look pretty bare…can’t believe I am now just a couple of days away now.  Here’s a couple more lessons I’ve learned while out here:

  • Ministry can become your entire life if you let it.
  • Doctors don’t know everything when it comes to your health.
  • Miracles are rare.

7yrs in Portland: What I’ve Learned #2

So this week I’ve decided to let you in on some lessons that I’ve learned during my time out here in the Wild Wild West.  Don’t expect them to be overly profound, they are just what came to mind when I reflected on my different experiences.

  • Time goes by really fast…reaaallly fast.
  • Old habits/patterns long gone can quickly return if you aren’t careful.
  • Relationships are hard and sadly many don’t last as long as you would like them to.

7yrs in Portland: What I’ve Learned.

Definitely a mix of emotions as I enter this final week living in Portland Oregon.  It has been a crazy adventure these past 7yrs years…nothing I could have ever dreamed up myself.  Been reminiscing lately…taking mental journeys back through all that I got to experience out here.  I’ve spent time writing down some of the lessons that I learned during this chapter and thought I would share them with you. I will share a couple each day until I head out on Thursday.

  • A lot changes outside of your control.
  • Vocational ministry will take more than you can give and return less than you need.
  • Relationships are the point of any programming.

One Month.

Crazy to think I have just one more month living in Portland.  There’s so much I hope to do and people I hope to see before the big move.  While I definitely will be back visiting PDX at least once a year (you cant rid of me completely!) I know things won’t be the same. Going to miss alot of people, places, food and memories made out here.

This week I’ve decided to do a little “tweet-series” sharing things I am going to miss from living out here. Follow along this week and look for my tweets with the hashtag: “#gonnamiss”

Wedding Video

Had a blast Saturday at Austin & Chelse’s Wedding.  I had two roles during the wedding/reception; I was Austin’s Best Man and also the MC at the reception. While I was reluctant when I was first asked to MC I was happy to serve the couple in any way I could. I put together a special video for the bride and groom so I thought I would share it with you here.

Austin’s Getting Married!

This Saturday my brother from another mother is getting married!  It’s a special occasion for a number of reasons, personally it has been such an honor to be asked to be his best man.  This has been the first wedding party that I’ve been in. We still get to eat first right?

A couple people have asked why I am not doing their wedding.  I think there’s a couple of reasons for this but mostly because of how my relationship with Austin has evolved over the past few years.  Though part of me would love to have done it…I am truly happy playing whatever part he wanted me to. Besides the guy performing the wedding is a ministry buddy of mine who I introduced Austin to a couple years back and is now lucky enough to have him interning at his church.

One of the most significant roles that the Best Man plays in a wedding is planning and executing the Bachelor Party.  Now bringing 7 guys together for an event is no small feat, but attempting to create a fun, memorable and CLEAN party is even more challenging.  In the end I think it came together well…and according to the groom he really enjoyed it.  The party had many variations over the past 3 months…my only regret is that I wish I had more resources to work with.

Here’s a rundown and some pictures from this past weekend;

First it was dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings – One of Austins Favorite restaurants and his choice for the night.

As we left BWW the rest of the weekend was a complete surprise to Austin – because I knew how much he loves being surprised.  The first surprise was that I rented a 2011 Ford Mustang.  We needed to ride in style and I wasnt about to drive this cat around in my 95 Escort with no air conditioning. After BWW we headed out to the Grand Lodge out in Forest Grove (with some fun in the car on the way).  Now if you havent been to the Grand Lodge its worth a trip even if you dont stay overnight. The hotel was built in 1922 as a Masonic Lodge and holds alot of history.  McMennimans took it over and made added alot of cool stuff.  Friday night we mostly hungout in the various bars & restaurants there.  Especially liked talking by a fire pit outside till they closed up and kicked us out at 1:30am.  We were then treated to some ghost stories from Byron, a unique character who worked the front desk through the night…who himself might have actually been a ghost.

Saturday – after 4hrs or so of sleep we woke up to a nice bath in their soaking tub.  Then it was an early lunch…we gave Austin some gifts there, including a grill from all of us. Then we played one of Austin’s favorite sports: Discgolf right there on the front lawn of the Lodge.  From there we headed out to Hagg Lake…again a big surprise to Austin…had a boat waiting for us to take us wake-boarding and tubing.  The weather was perfect and everything came together nicely on the lake…putting all of my anxieties aside.

As I knew it would, the weekend went by in a flash…got alittle emotional driving back home.  Alright enough blogging, time to get crackin on this toast Im supposed to give and another little trick up my sleeve :)

Last Day on the Bus

Simply can’t believe how fast the last 10 months have gone…seems like just yesterday I was running over cones in a parking lot learning how to drive a school bus.  In case you forgot, I took the job at the end of last summer after leaving my job as middle school director after nearly 7 years at Sunset Church.  After roughly 30 or so apps and months without work I was very pleased I got the job for the Beaverton School District.  While it was less than a third of what I had been making…it came with insurance which was important for a guy with Crohns.  The job stretched me in ways that I didn’t anticipate that it would…anyone out there who thinks its easy to manage a 40ft long vehicle through traffic loaded with 20-50 kids is a fool.

I won’t be returning next fall as I have decided to move home to Michigan (more on that HERE).  So on this my last day of driving a school bus I thought I would share with you the highs and lows of my experience.

HIGHS

  • Driving. I like the driving part of the job, and according to my 6th month evaluation did an excellent job at it.
  • Being surprised at how friendly and thoughtful some of the students were. Now this shouldn’t be that surprising for someone who previously worked 13yrs of his life with students…but I guess I viewed my role as minimal, just driving them to and from school 15min each day.
  • Seeing lots of kids from Wildfire (ministry at Sunset I led) at the schools that I drove to. I was blessed with a route that was literally right here in my own neighborhood! A God thing when you consider the 300 or so routes in the district…
  • Kaiser Insurance. Seriously my respect for Kaiser grew so much once I became a patient.  I got connected right away with a great GI doc and my infusion therapy which I need every 8 weeks cost ONLY a $15 copay! With other insurance companies the infusion is $2000 each time and the patient pays a percentage of it!
  • Being humbled as I worked alongside people who absolutely LOVED their job.  While I didn’t much care for it (see below) some have chosen this path and look forward to driving kiddos around each and everyday!  A couple of em have been driving for Beaverton for 30yrs! That’s as long as I’ve been alive!!!!

LOWS

  • Getting up at 6am every single day.
  • Very monotonous.  I can’t think of every having a job that was so similar day in and day out.  Turn this corner every morning at 8:30am…see lady walking dog in pink running suit… #killmenow
  • Random pay-periods & paychecks. It had been a LONG time since I had an hourly, punch-the-clock job and I forgot how much it sucked adjusting from 5 week pay periods to 3 week and back again.  Beaverton also paid us once a month…which seemed to make the sting of have no cash last longer.
  • Dealing with tough kids.  No matter how nice you are or how many attempts you make at building re-pore with students there are always a few fought authority figures at every opportunity.
  • Feeling like most of my professional gifts had been placed on the shelf for the past 10 months. I miss being in the saddle.
  • Did I mention getting up at 6am?! Man I thought I was done trying to be a morning person?
What’s next?
Well for the rest of summer is time to begin the transition to Michigan at the end of August. I will continue to get a portion of my bus driver pay until August 20th…but I say portion because during the summer we fall down to our “base pay” which ends up being about half for me. Needless to say I will need to make up the difference for a couple of months. I will be house-sitting a bunch and am hoping to get photography gigs with my buddy David. Beyond that I would love to know of opportunities for a bright, single, flexible guy like me to earn some extra cash.  I also take donations…but would rather work for $$$.
If I ever right a book someday this chapter will be titled: “Driving a Bus Through the Desert.”

Back to Michigan

After several months of prayer and seeking wisdom from trusted friends & mentors I’ve decided to move back to Michigan.

I share this news with an even mix of sadness and excitement.  I bet for some of you this news comes as no surprise since people have been asking if I have been considering the move since I left my job at Sunset Pres. nearly a year ago.  Honestly I hadn’t until about 5 months ago.

So why would I move back to Michigan? There are two main reasons that rise to the top.  First I increasingly had the feeling that my time in Oregon is done. It’s kind of like near the end of a movie you haven’t seen before, you begin to sense it’s coming to an end.  It hasn’t been one thing that brought this feeling about but rather a number of them. Many significant relationships have either come to an end or have changed considerably.  Things that were once easy have now seem like a struggle. When I moved out here 7 years ago I sensed it would be for a season and probably not forever.

Secondly my family in Michigan needs me.  My grandfather went into assisted living this past November and the smallness of my family has made it pretty hard on my mom, sister & grandmother. I look forward to being able to offer more than just my words to help ease the pressure on the fam.

When will I be moving? That is still to be determined…could be as soon as next month or as late as Sept/Oct.  Obviously a move cross country is not something you want to rush. Before I move I hope to find money to move with, a place to live and a job. My apartment lease runs till November…so that would be the latest I would likely stay. I have been talking with churches back in Michigan since Christmas break and am actually heading to Lansingthis weekend for an interview for a Student Ministry position.

So there it is. Feels good to “go public” with it as I don’t like holding stuff like this back.

To my Michigan friends & family…looking forward to reconnecting with you and starting my next chapter with you.  That being said, 7 years is a long time and I don’t have any unrealistic expectations of sliding right back in where we left off. Though Oregon has been where I lived most recently Michigan has always been “home.”

To my Oregon friends…it pains me to share this news with you and I hope that I stay connected with many of you once I move.  There will no doubt be yearly visits back to Oregon and I would love to have you visit me if time & money allow. I haven’t left yet so let’s make the most of our time! There’s alot I would like to do before I head back east.
