Coveting via Twitter

Loved this article by JonaCuff on Coveting via Twitter. I will shamelessly admit that I have suffered with this one…I wonder have you?

Long before there were American Girl Dolls, shout out to Kirsten (rest in peace), there were Cabbage Patch Dolls.

They were the Tickle-me-Elmo of the Christmas craze one year. (I just used an old reference to explain an older reference. Let me try that again.)

They were the Wii of the Christmas craze one year. (Still not relevant? Last time.)

They were the Quitter of the Christmas craze one year. Everyone wanted one, much like the bookQuitter this Christmas, and people got in shoving matches over these simple dolls.

The story behind them was that the dolls were born in a cabbage patch, delivered by nurses and then brought to your house via a stork. At the Cabbage Patch headquarters in North Georgia, you could actually go see the dolls born and delivered by people dressed as nurses. That sounds a little weird, but kids loved the experience and flocked there in droves.

One day, my friend and her husband brought their kids to the Cabbage Patch hospital. When their young daughters weren’t looking, they bought a doll. Their plan was to hide it in the trunk of their car without their youngest daughter seeing it, then give it to her a few months later on Christmas. Bad idea.

The “nurse” who “delivered” the cabbage patch “baby” walked out to “the” (sorry got on a roll there) car to see the family off. When the nurse saw my friend’s husband put the Cabbage Patch doll in the car, she freaked out.

She ran over and said, “You can’t put that baby in the trunk. She won’t be able to breathe!” Stupified, the dad responded, “Uh, it’s just a doll.” But the nurse wouldn’t budge. “She won’t be able to breathe,” she repeated.

Finally, the dad tore an air hole in the plastic bag the doll was in, appeased the nurse and slowly shut the trunk. Then he walked to the driver’s side of the car and never looked back.

Can we all agree that lady was a little crazy? I mean the kids were already buckled in the car. The “doll can’t breathe” performance wasn’t for them. That’s at least a smidge crazy, and I should know because sometimes I think I might be crazy too.

I bumped into that possible reality recently while looking at Twitter.

I created a list of friends, so that in the melee of thousands of tweets a day, I can specifically see what 10-20 people I know are up to via their tweets.

But in the midst of doing that, I’ve realized something rather pathetic, insecure and crazy of me.

I’m getting really jealous of my friends. As I scroll through their tweets, here are a couple of things that pop into my head:

“Oh wow. That friend hung out with that other friend and they did something amazing together. Huh. Why didn’t they invite me?”

“Whoa. That friend just announced, ‘I had a great time seeing people I love in Nashville, time to fly back home.’ Weird, he didn’t even tell me he was going to be in town.”

Then I sit in this ridiculous pity party, which eventually mutates into me coveting a life other than my own.

I want those adventures.

I want to be invited to those events.

I want to be as cool or as interesting or as funny or as anything as my friends.

I covet 2.0. And in discussing this with my wife, a few things came to light.

1. When I covet my friends, it’s really hard to love my friends.
My friends aren’t doing anything wrong. It’s me and my insecurities. But by dwelling there, I build up all this residual frustration with my friends, and that gets in the way of my ability to love them. I want to be someone who celebrates his friends, not someone who covets them.

2. This makes me like a seventh grade girl.
My wife doesn’t struggle with covet 2.0, but says she understands it because she “used to be a seventh grade girl.” In the cafeteria on Monday mornings in middle school, she said it was hard to hear about sleepovers and events you hadn’t been invited to. Why was it hard? Because she was a slightly insecure seventh grade girl. Which is apparently much like me.

3. This isn’t how it always was.
Ten years ago, you didn’t know about all the amazing things your friends were doing. No one called you and 300 other people on the phone and said, “Hey, I just saw an amazing sunset, went on a hot air balloon, got invited to a secret concert and had a brilliant lunch with somebody who won’t return your calls. Just wanted to make sure you knew.” The phenomenon of tracking the movements of all our friends is new. And the weird thing is that, ten years ago, I swear I never said, “I wish I knew what everyone I know was doing constantly. I could see that being really healthy for me.”

4. The Internet is a “Best Life” snapshot.
When you read somebody’s tweets or scroll through their photos on Facebook, you’re seeing a snapshot of somebody’s best life. Sure, some people share raw/honest moments moreso than others, but no one shares everything. (If you share everything and don’t hold back something personal for you or your spouse, you eventually become a “performer,” not a person.) People share vacations and sunsets and parties. And then you sit in your own very normal, messy life with boringness and ups and downs and think, “My life is no good.”

This isn’t a Twitter or Facebook issue. I am a huge fan of social media and have personally seen the tremendous good that can come from both. But right now, in my own life, I’ve turned my Twitter friends list into a place for me to hide and get jealous and covet 2.0.

If you’re my friend, sorry about being so silly. Covet 2.0 snuck up on me, and I’ve spent the last few months acting like I’m in the seventh grade. And since Chess King is closed, Color Me Badd is not on the top of the charts, and I’m not wearing Z-Cavaricci’s right now, I know that’s not where I’m supposed to be.

Question:
Have you ever experienced covet 2.0?

Today’s Apple Event

You know you are officially a tech geek when you put a liveblog event on your calendar and shape your day around it.  If you haven’t heard today was yet another well hyped Apple event where they announced: release of IOS5 & iCloud on Oct 12th, iPhone 4S.

Here’s my take on it all, let’s start with the good:

I am very excited about IOS5...so many useful and exciting features coming to iPhone and iPad, many of which they got from Android and Blackberry.  And the best part…if you own one of Apples devices…it’s a free update! I will fully admit my excitement here stems from the fact that the only Apple device I own is an iPad2.  Can.not.wait for the new notifications. Probably should drag the guy who designed the old ones out into the street and shoot him…or at least make him watch Mars Needs Moms non-stop for like a month.

And on to the bad:

No iPhone 5? Wow you push back your launch calendar only to NOT release a slick new iPhone? Seems like such a fail and starts to show that Apple is falling behind the competition.  Sure they will make us begin to drool and think about the iPhone5 launch now inevitably next year but then there will be even faster, thinner and smarter phones out there to compete with. Seems foolish to think most who already have an iPhone4 would upgrade for this…

Seriously Apple another year not getting on the 4G/LTE bandwagon? I thought it was a mistake last year not to add it to your phones spec sheet, after all you are supposed to be way out in front of the competition right? Now customers will presumably have to wait another year before getting an iPhone capable of 4G speeds. And nice try with your fancy powerpoint slide to try to fool us…though most consumers will once again believe everything you say without checking into any of it. Fact is no 4G/LTE radios on board. Once again not an Apple Hater but definitely a HypeHater. (check my former post about that).

So I am still very happy with my recent Galaxy S2 purchase, and I as I always say: having an Android phone and an iPad gives me the best of both worlds! Whether it’s an app on Android, iPad or iPhone I can get it! Ok now out to enjoy this beautiful Michigan fall day!

Apple Hater?

Recently I was accused (not for the first time) of being an “Apple Hater.”  Unless you have been living under a rock you have heard of the upcoming iPhone 4 launch in a little over a week.  A number of my friends and co-workers are super excited about this and have already got their pre-orders in.  Last week when the official announcement was made I offered my two cents on the new phones specs, mostly because I had just purchased the EVO 4G which is the first phone (in my opinion) to really give iPhone some healthy competition.  And well I still think it beats the iPhone…that’s not what I wanted to blog about.  What I wanted to address is just how polarizing the whole Apple thing has become.  I mean if you say anything remotely critical of the new iPhone and you are tagged an “Apple hater.”  On the flip side people who are excited about the iPhone are labeled “Apple fanboys.”  So let me attempt to express where I stand on this ever so important issue.  I am NOT an apple hater.  Seriously I love technology and have always admired and at times lusted over the latest technology.  Just about every time I am at the mall I stop by the Apple store and play with the new iPad (usually just to better my previous score on Flight Control).  I have owned numerous iPods in the past, including most recently a iTouch.  I have never owned a Mac simply because I still think PCs are better for a number of reasons, however I do think Apple does the best when it comes to the actual hardware design of notebooks. I also have never owned an iPhone myself but honestly most of this has boiled down to the carrier it seems to be eternally linked with; AT&T.  Had it been released on Sprint (my carrier for like 15yrs) or even Verizon I would have taken a much harder look at it.

What I would say is that I am a “hype-hater.”  I have been consistently against liking or wanting something simply because everyone else wants it or some guy  (Steve Jobs) tells you that you must have one of these.  There’s no doubt that iPhone has become a status symbol…something that for many is a MUST HAVE for no other reason than it makes them feel better about themselves.  Now before you attack me and accuse me of hypocrisy, I’m not saying that everyone who wants to iPhone has this motivation…nor will I say that I’ve never fell into the trap of wanting something simply because it was the “IT” thing to buy.  To me it has just been interesting as I’ve attempted to point out some differences between the EVO and the new iPhone…differences that before the launch would have been seen as advantages to a device are now seen as “unnecessary” or “not important.” For example the new iPhone will not even have the option of connecting to a 4G network. Now it is true that 4G on Sprint  has limited availablity, but I would prefer to have the option especially since coverage is ONLY going to get better over the next year.  Also the EVO’s screen is almost an complete INCH bigger than the new iPhone’s screen. While Apple is touting their new retinal display is epic…and well I agree resolution is important…I would rather have more screen real estate to view email, web, pictures and anything else I do on the phone more than having a little bit more crisper image. Heck I can’t recall seeing pixels on the EVO…and if you wanna talk specs, I’ve heard if you stretched the screen size on the iPhone out the same size as the EVOs…then the resolution would be very similar, like the difference of 30.  And lastly there’s the camera.  EVO = 8 mega pixels vs. iPhone = 5 megapixel.  Now before Steve Jobs commented about mega pixels not being all that important, I always thought it was an advantage for a phone camera to continue to climb the mega pixels to get closer to what a traditional point and shoot camera had.  The idea being that you could leave your camera at home and just use your phones camera instead.  As a novice photographer I prefer the more mega pixels I can get so that I have more options to edit and blow up my images.  The irony in Steve saying that mega pixels aren’t that important is why didn’t he just leave the iPhone at the previous 3 mega pixels then? Seems to me it mattered enough to move up 2 megapixels…why not move it up 5 Mr Jobs?

All that to say I think we should all buy the best product out there for the things we intend to use it for.  When buying a SMARTPhone, let’s be smart people and not buy stuff simply because it’s what everyone else is going to have.  Status symbols always lose their glamour anyways the minute everyone realizes that everyone has one.

I am not an Apple Hater…I really like Golden Delicious apples I get at Safeway each week :)

Twitter Trends

What happened to airlines letting you change your flight to a later time for free?!?!?!?! American wanted $150 fee to change my flight back from LA to a later time! Sheesh…ok venting over.

trendtracker

Most of you know I am a twitterer (not sure that is a word) and am into technology stuff. Even if you dont tweet you have to pause and consider just how much Twitter has taken off and changed culture in the past two years.  There are so many sites and programs now devoted to Twittering.  This week I found yet another tool out there that works with Twitter and wanted to show you.  Basically it’s a website that shows the twitter trends out there in a visual manner.  Check it out for yourself HERE.
